Why is there a growth on my eyelid?
There are many types of eyelid bumps that appear. They may be white, brown, red or yellow. Most of the time, a growth on the eyelid is harmless but can be irritating and make one self-conscious about their appearance.
Nonetheless, it is important to have any eyelid growths assessed by a specialist to rule out cancerous growths.
Types of eyelid growths are:
- Stye: A stye forms on the outer ridge of the eyelid and is painful to touch.
- Chalazion: A chalazion looks like a stye but is a little bigger, about the size of a pea. Chalazia form behind the eyelashes but mostly occur on the upper eyelid. When a large chalazion does not go away on its own or causes blurry vision, it needs to be removed.
- Milium: Also known as milk spots or oilseeds, milia are small white cysts that are prevalent in children.
- Xanthelasma: Xanthelasma is an accumulation of yellow cholesterol plaque under the skin, close to the nose.
- Papilloma: Papillomas are benign growths of the skin cells.
- Basal cell carcinoma: BCC is a common cancerous growth of the middle skin layers, which usually has a nodular appearance.
- Squamous cell carcinoma: SCC is a less common cancerous growth of the upper skin layers, which usually has an ulcerating appearance.
- Melanoma: Melanoma is a very malignant growth of the deeper skin layers and usually has a pigmented appearance.
How do you treat eyelid growths?
Similar to pimples, chalazia must never be popped. Milia disappear in time. Xanthelasma has a lot to do with high cholesterol and unhealthy eating. Medication might shrink the growth, but it won't disappear entirely. There are three ways to remove growths on eyelids which are through electrosurgery, cryotherapy and snip excision. Dr McClunan has to either freeze the growth or use a laser or scalpel to cut it out.
The procedure takes five to thirty minutes and may be performed in the rooms or in theatre, depending on the size and type of growth. Dr McClunan administers local anaesthesia to numb the area near the eye and then removes the growth entirely.
Chalazion excision is a surgical procedure whereby inflamed tissue is scooped from a small incision under the eyelid. This is a typical procedure for children with eyelid growths. An ointment has to be applied to the region after surgery.
