SPECTACLE AND CONTACT LENS INTOLERANCE
Some patients are intolerant to the use of spectacles or contact lenses. Spectacle and contact lens intolerance may occur due to patient preference, lifestyle reasons, improper contact lens usage, dry eyes, ocular allergies or other ocular conditions.
Dr McClunan offers comprehensive refractive screening services to assess whether patients are suitable for alternatives to spectacles or contact lenses. Through a slit lamp exam, Dr McClunan can see the internal structure of the eye under powerful magnification. The microscope lights up the patient's eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, and lens, allowing Dr McClunan to identify any causes of spectacle or contact lens intolerance such as tear gland abnormalities, ocular surface problems, corneal scarring or cataract. Corneal topography (corneal thickness and steepness assessment) is then performed along with assessment of the anterior chamber depth.
If Dr McClunan identifies ocular problems which can be addressed to improve spectacle or contact lens intolerance, then he is able to treat these conditions. However, if the patient wishes to be free from spectacles or contact lenses, then Dr McClunan may recommend laser refractive procedures such as LASIK or PRK, or surgical procedures such as Limbal relaxing incisions, Implantable contact lens (ICL) implantation or lens exchange. The decision of which option is best for the patient depends on various ocular factors as well as the patient’s wishes and lifestyle factors.

What our Patients have to say
"There was never a shadow of doubt in my mind that I had chosen the right specialist. I can honestly say my eyesight can now be compared with that of a teenager. For those of you, regardless of your age, that need any sort of eye treatment, I have no hesitation in saying - look no further."
